About#

For nearly three decades, I've worked at the collision point between transformative technologies and their civilization-level implications.

My focus: the technologies that reshape the rules. AI and autonomous systems. Biotech and synthetic biology. Quantum computing. The futures currently hiding in today's research labs, policy debates, and venture capital portfolios.

Currently Head of AI Research at QA-Systems, where I explore how language models intersect with safety-critical systems. Previously: embedded systems, aerospace, nuclear. The domains where "move fast and break things" meets "lives depend on this."

I write books, contribute to technical advisory boards, and speak about the intersection of AI safety and governance.

I write books, advise organizations occasionally, and appear in front of microphones to argue about what happens next.

Research & Writing#

My work explores how transformative technologies—AI, autonomous systems, biotech, quantum—reshape society and what we might do about it. This takes the form of books, white papers, essays, and sometimes uncomfortable conversations about where we're heading.

The thread running through it all: translating between technical possibility and human consequence.

Selected Activities#

Across these roles, my focus is the same: helping different communities—engineers, policymakers, executives—actually talk about the same future.

  • HiPEAC — Expert consultation on European AI research priorities
  • TechNexus — Advisory board member for emerging technology assessment
  • LSE Executive Education — Guest lecturer on AI governance and safety

Background#

  • MEng University of Bath
  • 28 years working at the intersection of safety-critical systems and emerging technologies
  • Published author on embedded systems, AI, and technological futures
  • Regular speaker at international technology conferences

The work continues.

I also write science fiction. That's where I put the ideas that scare even me.
